With the onset of the summer season, more people are starting to plan outdoor activities, such as: outdoor gatherings, hikes, picnics with a barbecue , etc.

All of this comes with fire safety risks. Adhering to fire safety rules outdoors is just as important as it is in residential or commercial buildings.

In this blog, we’ll share some basic outdoor fire safety tips to keep in mind at your next gathering to ensure a safe environment and enjoyable experience for everyone attending your event. Let’s get right to the point.

Barbecue

Entertainment venues

Grilling meat is a great addition to any outdoor gathering, and cooking meat is a favorite outdoor activity for many. However, leaving the fire unattended after cooking can lead to a dangerous situation (we have many examples of this in Georgia).

With the use of open flames, flammable materials, unpredictable sparks in the air, and embers, cooking meat over an open fire creates a wide range of potential hazards.

Consider the following tips:

  • Choose a flat area to light the fire, away from bushes, trees, and sheds (there should be no tree branches over the fire pit).

  • Keep small children and pets away from such places.

  • Never leave the hearth unattended.

  • Make sure you have a bucket of sand or water nearby to put out the fire in case of an emergency.

  • After cooking, make sure that the remaining charcoal has cooled down properly. Do not leave the charcoal burning.

Bonfire

Hiking areas

Sitting around a campfire while camping, whether with friends or alone, is a fun tradition. However, if the fire is not completely extinguished, there is a chance that it will rekindle, even from a few small embers. A fire can destroy a tent in less than a minute, so it is important to take appropriate precautions to prevent a fire.

Consider the following tips:

  • When hiking, before lighting a campfire, make sure that lighting a fire is allowed in a particular place, as certain areas (especially protected areas) have rules and regulations that prohibit lighting a fire anywhere. In such cases, the campfire should be lit in places designated in advance by the owner of the territory or a state agency or body.

  • Again, make sure you use a designated area or safe area that is away from branches, dry grass, or nearby flammable materials and structures.

  • Never use paraffin or gasoline to light a campfire.

  • Make sure you have enough water or sand nearby to put out the fire.

  • Never leave a campfire unattended.

  • Be sure to put out the fire before returning to your tent for the night.

Sky lanterns

Sky lanterns can add a magical touch to an outdoor gathering and create a mesmerizing display in the night sky. However, if they are not handled carefully, they can pose a significant fire risk. The open flame used to launch a lantern (which is lit by a paraffin candle or other type of flammable material) can have potentially catastrophic consequences if it falls.

Consider the following tips:

  • In some countries, the use of sky lanterns is banned altogether.

  • Take into account environmental conditions such as wind speed and direction, as they can affect the flight trajectory.

  • Always make sure your sky lanterns are used in open spaces, away from trees, buildings, or any flammable materials.

  • Consider having a dedicated person responsible for monitoring the movement of the lanterns during their flight (and responding immediately if they fall).

  • The main advice from the detector is that it is better to completely abandon the use of such types of lanterns.
